President Trump’s Broken Promises on Health Care
President Trump has made a number of promises on health care and claimed that he would protect Medicaid. Unfortunately, he hasn’t kept those promises:
EVERYBODY WILL BE COVERED
CLAIM: “Everybody has to be covered. It is an un-Republican thing for me to say. I am going to take care of everybody.” [CBS 60 Minutes, 9/9/17]
REALITY: According to the Congressional Budget office, the Senate TrumpCare bill would take away health coverage from 22 million Americans by 2026, including 4 million people who would lose their employer-based coverage. 15 million Americans would lose coverage next year.
HEALTH CARE WILL BE LESS EXPENSIVE & BETTER
CLAIM: “We're going to have a health care that is far less expensive and far better.” [Press Conference, New York City, 1/11/17]
CLAIM: “Yes, premiums will be coming down. Yes, deductibles will be coming down.” [Rose Garden Celebration, 5/4/17]
CLAIM: “You know, I have been talking about a plan with heart. I said add some money to it. A plan with heart.” [Rally, Cedar Rapids, IA, 6/21/17]
REALITY:
•The CBO estimates that the Senate TrumpCare bill would increase premiums by 20% above current law next year and raise out-of-pocket costs in the marketplaces, in addition to driving up premiums for employer-provided coverage.
•Under the Senate TrumpCare bill, CBO says that premiums and deductibles would become so expensive that “few low-income people would purchase any plan.”
•The Senate TrumpCare bill would allow discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions by permitting insurers to impose annual and lifetime limits and to charge significantly higher premiums for plans covering essential benefits.
•According to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis, people will face higher costs and worse coverage:◦“People who now buy insurance on healthcare.gov or a state exchange… would have to pay 74 percent more on average to get equivalent coverage.”
◦“Other consumers would keep getting coverage, but in order to afford premiums within their means they’d have to take policies with higher out-of-pocket costs in the form of bigger co-payments and deductibles, or plans without key benefits like mental health coverage.”
•The Senate TrumpCare bill would also impose an “age tax,” allowing older Americans to be charged five times as much for care.
NO CUTS TO MEDICAID
CLAIM: “I’m not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid.” [The Daily Signal, 5/21/15]
CLAIM: “Save Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security without cuts. Have to do it.” [Press Conference, New York City, 6/15/2016]
REALITY: TrumpCare cuts $772 billion dollars from Medicaid over the next ten years. CBO estimates 15 million Americans will lose coverage from Medicaid under TrumpCare, including vulnerable children, seniors in nursing homes, and low-income Americans.
