Hoyer Statement on House Passage of Harmful Immigration Legislation
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed two harmful immigration bills:
“I am disappointed that House Republicans passed legislation today that will make it harder for law enforcement to keep our communities safe. The immigration bills will discourage immigrant victims of domestic abuse and other crimes from coming forward to seek justice for fear of being deported and require the government, potentially, to send asylum-seekers back to face violence or death in their home countries. It’s no surprise why law enforcement agencies and organizations across the country oppose these measures and why so many are disturbed by the life-and-death impact they might have on those seeking safety and refuge here. Furthermore, the process of bringing these bills to the Floor and up for votes was not conducted in a bipartisan way. Democrats were not permitted to offer amendments to improve these bills, even though we all agree in the importance of law and order, secure borders, and the need to protect our people from harm.
”It’s important that Congress gets serious about fixing our broken immigration system and addressing all of the immigration and border challenges we face. Trying to tackle them piecemeal through individual bills in partisan process won’t work. It’s time for Congress to come together and achieve consensus on comprehensive immigration reform that keeps Americans safe, helps our economy grow, and protects human rights.”
