Hoyer Statement on the Fifth Anniversary of DACA
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:
“Five years ago today, President Obama took action to protect DREAMers, using his executive authority to launch the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DREAMers, undocumented immigrants who were brought to this country as children through no actions of their own, in many cases have no memory of living anywhere but the United States. DREAMers contribute substantially to our economy, to our national security, and to our culture. They are as American as the rest of us and deserve an opportunity to remain in the nation they call home and wish to help make stronger, safer, and more prosperous.
“From the very start, Republicans in Congress have been working to undermine DACA through court actions and legislation. Now, the Trump Administration is working to dismantle the program and tear families apart. Democrats will continue to support DREAMers and their families, and we will do everything in our power to defend DACA while pushing for comprehensive immigration reform that creates a pathway to legal status for DREAMers and ensures they have a place in the nation they love.”
