Hoyer Statement on Reports of Trump Administration Plans to Roll Back Civil Rights Protections
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on reports the Trump Administration is planning to roll back civil rights programs in agencies across the federal government:
“I am deeply alarmed by today’s report regarding the Trump Administration’s efforts to eliminate or undermine offices and programs that protect civil rights. By proposing to eliminate the Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, which prevents federal contractors from discriminating, the Trump Administration is sending a dangerous signal that the federal government would allow taxpayers to fund discrimination. It is also unacceptable that Trump’s budget significantly cuts staff at the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights and that leadership at the Environmental Protection Agency has proposed eliminating its environmental justice program.
“The federal government has a responsibility to prevent discrimination – not roll back protections that make it easier. Democrats will strongly oppose any effort to undermine the civil rights of Americans, and I urge Congressional Republicans to stand with us in support of equality and justice.”
