Hoyer Statement on Attack in London
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the terror attack in London yesterday:
"The British people have now endured multiple terror attacks in a short period, but they continue to face adversity with strength, with perseverance, and with unity. Those who attack our democracies seek not only the destruction of lives and property; their aim is to sow fear among us that we might turn on each other in distrust. That we might weaken the democratic institutions that preserve our liberty in the name of safety.
"President Trump's tweets were inappropriate and do not reflect the views of most Americans. These attackers did not strike London because of 'political correctness.' They did not sow violence and hatred because Britons, Americans, and many others insist on acknowledging the equal dignity of every person among us. They struck out of a deep-seated belief that they can break our spirits and cause us to abandon our highest values. So let us not give these terrorists what they seek; let us fight fear with hope, extremism with common sense, and violence with the joined hands of common purpose. We grieve with the victims and their families in London, and we stand strong to meet this common threat of terror together."
