Hoyer Statement on President Trump's Fiscal Year 2018 Budget
HOYER: TRUMP’S BUDGET IS A LITANY OF BROKEN PROMISES, MAKES CLEAR THAT HE IS NOT FIGHTING FOR WORKING AMERICANS
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Trump's proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2018:
“President Trump’s budget is a litany of broken promises to the American people. With this budget, he makes clear that he is not fighting for working Americans and their families. Instead, he is attempting to hide an agenda of tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of helping Americans get ahead. It would severely gut nutrition assistance, shift billions from public schools to private ones, make it harder for parents to send their kids to college, threaten public health through drastic cuts to clean air and water programs, and make America less safe by defunding the diplomats and aid programs that form a critical part of our national security strategy.
“President Trump’s budget also breaks his promise not to cut Medicaid, instead slashing it by $1.4 trillion; not to cut Social Security, instead reducing support for Social Security Disability Insurance; and that taxpayers would not be asked to foot the bill for his proposed border wall.
“The President’s budget pretends to balance over time, using fantastical math to assume that his tried-and-failed budget policies will result in strong economic growth to fill in its trillions in deficit gaps.
“I hope Republicans will see this budget for the absurdity that it is and reject it, choosing instead to work with Democrats to advance a sensible budget resolution and appropriations bills that invest in the economic security and national security the American people sent us here to achieve on their behalf.”
