Hoyer Statement on Meeting with Mexican Ambassador Gerónimo Gutiérrez
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after meeting with the Mexican Ambassador to the United States, Gerónimo Gutiérrez:
“I was honored to meet today with Ambassador Gutiérrez to discuss issues important to the U.S.-Mexico relationship and the millions of Mexican-Americans living in our country. The United States and Mexico share more than a long border; we share a long history of cooperation, cultural exchange, and economic ties. Our relationship is strong and can endure any challenge.
“I reassured Ambassador Gutiérrez that Democrats in Congress, led by the outstanding Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, will continue to defend the rights of Mexican-Americans and immigrants who wish to be a part of building a stronger America and bringing our nations closer. I also made it clear that I believe walls are not an answer to our immigration challenges here in the United States, and that we cannot wall ourselves off from the world and from our trading partners.”
