Hoyer Statement on Arms Deal with Saudi Arabia
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the arms deal with Saudi Arabia announced by the Trump Administration:
"The $110 billion arms transfer to Saudi Arabia announced by the White House - possibly as much as $350 billion overall - raises questions that need to be answered. Was the Israeli government consulted beforehand? Did the Administration provide explicit assurances to Israel, as the Obama Administration did in 2010, regarding the maintenance of its qualitative military edge? Congress also needs to know what impact this sale would have on the ongoing famine in Yemen and related human rights issues. The Administration failed to brief Congress on any of the details of this deal while it was in the works. President Trump must be forthright in providing answers to these questions now, and Congress must ensure that this Administration does not put Israel's security in jeopardy."
