Hoyer Statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in observance of Yom Ha'Shoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day:
"Tonight begins the annual observance of Yom Ha'Shoah, a day to mourn the six million Jews murdered during history's most brutal genocide as well as to pay tribute to heroic acts of rescue and resistance. The Nazis and their collaborators sought not only to end lives but to extinguish the flame of a civilization that had survived persecution over centuries. That flame, however, survived because of their faith, their determination to live, and the courage of so many people who risked their lives as partizans, rescuers, and liberators. It continues to cast its warmth and its light today in Israel, in America, and from every place where Jewish communities thrive.
"I am very proud of America's role in defeating Nazism, but our responsibility extends to preventing further acts of genocide and bringing to an end the vile scourge of anti-Semitism, which sadly continues even here in our country. On this most solemn day, let us all resolve to redouble our efforts to eradicate racism and intolerance from our midst and stand with the people of Israel and the State of Israel in the fight to achieve lasting security and peace of mind for Jews wherever they reside."
