Hoyer Statement on Russia's Veto of UN Resolution on Syria
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Russia vetoed a United Nations resolution to hold the Syrian government accountable for last week's chemical weapons attack:
"With its veto today of a resolution demanding that Syria cooperate with an investigation into the chemical weapons attack against civilians in Idlib, Russia continues to prop up a murderous and destabilizing regime while helping to cover up a heinous war crime by its ally. This veto makes it all the more critical for the Trump Administration to present a coherent strategy on how to hold Syria and its Russian backers accountable for the chemical attack. Instead, we've only heard blustery talk and contradictory statements, all while the Administration tries to distract from very serious questions about ties between the Trump campaign and Administration officials and Russia. A missile strike is not a strategy; the American people need to see a plan to defeat ISIS, stop the destabilizing carnage in Syria, and hold Russia accountable for its support of the Assad regime."
