Hoyer Statement on Arrests of Protesters in Russia
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the arrest of peaceful protestors in Russia by Vladimir Putin's regime:
"The violent suppression of peaceful protests in Russia reflect the deep morass into which Vladimir Putin's Russia has fallen. When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, the future of Russia was full of promise. Today, after seventeen years of increasingly repressive rule by Putin and his cadre of oligarchs, Russia's economy is in near-collapse, and its leaders cling desperately to power through relentless propaganda and rules prohibiting even peaceful gatherings to protest government corruption. But the world is watching. I join in condemning the arrests of Alexei Navalny and other Russians seeking to protest peacefully over the weekend, and I urge the Putin government to allow citizens to speak their minds freely in public without fear of suppression or retribution."
