Hoyer Statement on Reports That the Trump Administration Has Ordered HHS to End All Outreach for Open Enrollment
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after it was reported that the Trump Administration has ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to end all outreach for open enrollment in the health care marketplace, including pulling television ads promoting enrollment:
“It’s one thing for Republicans to seek to take away health coverage from tens of millions of Americans; it’s another to sabotage the existing health system while it is serving American families. That’s exactly what the Trump Administration did yesterday when it ordered an end to all outreach to inform Americans of their health coverage options during the final days of open enrollment for 2017.
“Again and again, President Trump and senior Republicans, including Secretary of Health and Human Services nominee Rep. Tom Price, have promised the American people that consumers currently in the marketplace would not lose access to their plans or their doctors. Yet, again and again they have broken this promise by pushing for repeal policies that would throw 30 million people off their insurance plans, raise premiums for millions of others, and create uncertainty in the marketplace that would upend our entire health care system. Yesterday’s decision to censor information about consumers’ options under open enrollment adds to these broken promises and represents an abandonment of their responsibility to implement the law.
“I strongly urge the Administration to allow the Department of Health and Human Services to resume informing Americans of their rights and options under open enrollment so they can take advantage of affordable marketplace plans and find out if they can save money on their monthly premiums.”
