Hoyer: As Zika Virus Spreads, Congress Must Act on Senate Compromise As Soon As Possible
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the CDC released a Zika travel advisory for Miami Beach:
“I am deeply concerned that additional locally-transmitted cases of the Zika virus have been identified in Miami, resulting in a travel advisory for Miami Beach, one of the city’s most popular tourist areas. As the threat of Zika grows, it is shameful that House Republicans have failed to work on a bipartisan basis to ensure that the necessary resources are available to respond to this public health emergency. Last week, I visited the Little Haiti section of Miami and spoke with local residents and business owners about the impact the Zika outbreak is having on both the health of Floridians as well as their local economy. Congress must act to pass the Senate’s Murray-Blunt compromise – free of any poison pill provisions – so that we can prevent the virus from spreading further and keep Americans healthy and safe. I urge Speaker Ryan to stop playing politics by pushing House Republicans’ partisan bill that places women’s health at risk and take up the Senate compromise as soon as possible.”
