Hoyer Announces 2016 Member Online All-Star Competition
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) announced the beginning of the 2016 House Democrats’ Member Online All-Star Competition, an annual three-week competition for House Democrats to gain new followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
“There is no doubt that social media improves communication between the Democratic Caucus and the American people, which is why it is so important that we continue to increase our online engagement,” said Whip Hoyer. “Last year, House Democrats added a record 231,000 new followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube over three weeks, and I’m confident we will further expand our reach with this year’s competition. I look forward to seeing all of the innovative ways Members connect with their constituents and increase their followers over the next three weeks.”
During the three-week competition, which began at midnight last night, the number of new followers gained by Members, committees, and Caucuses are tracked on a scoreboard. The top 50 Members at the conclusion of the contest will be named Online All-Stars, the top finisher will be named the MVP, the top freshman office will be named Freshman MVP, and the top Member currently in an pre-election Franking blackout will be named blackout MVP. The top three committees and the top two Caucuses are also named Online All-Stars. Additionally, awards will be presented for the top video, top infographic, top constituent services post, and most viral content produced.
Last year, Rep. Katherine Clark won overall MVP and Rep. Debbie Dingell won Freshman MVP in the competition. Two Members – Reps. John Lewis and Michelle Lujan Grisham – received awards for the most viral posts. In addition, a number of other Members were recognized for outstanding content. Rep. Mark Pocan won the “best video” sub-category, Rep. Ami Bera won the “best infographic” sub-category, and Rep. Louise Slaughter won “top constituent services” post. A video with highlights from the 2015 competition can be found here.
Every morning for the next three weeks, the scoreboard will update the top 50 Members. Beginning tomorrow morning, the top 50 Members on the scoreboard can be viewed by the public at DemocraticWhip.gov/AllStar.
