Hoyer Statement on the Republican-led Senate's Failure to Advance Commonsense Legislation to Address Gun Violence
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Republican-led Senate failed to advance commonsense legislation to address gun violence:
“The Republican-led Senate’s failure to advance even scaled-back reforms to keep dangerous, military-style firearms out of the hands of terror suspects demonstrates the outrageous extent to which the NRA and other groups have shut down our national conversation on responsible gun ownership. When majorities of Democrats, independents, Republicans, and even gun owners all support commonsense background check laws and restrictions to keep guns away from those who cannot be trusted to use them responsibly, we ought to be able to make progress. Yet, progress has proven elusive again and again. How many more Americans – young and old, from every background – will have their lives cut short by gun violence before Congress takes responsible action to make our communities safer?
“House Democrats refuse to be silent or back down from this effort. We will continue to speak out and promote gun safety proposals that will save lives and make it harder for those bent on terror and violence to be able to carry out their plans. We will not stop until we achieve the reforms we seek – and so many Americans demand. I urge Republicans to work with us to enact bipartisan, commonsense gun safety legislation to reduce the likelihood of tragedies like the ones in Orlando, in Newtown, and in too many other places now etched in our collective memory.”
