Hoyer Statement on House Democrats' Sit-In to Demand a Vote on Legislation to Address Gun Violence
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today as House Democrats staged a sit-in to demand Republicans hold a vote on legislation to address gun violence:
"Today, House Democrats are staging a sit-in on the Floor of the House of Representatives to demand a vote on legislation to address gun violence. After the unspeakable slaughter of 49 innocent people in Orlando earlier this month, it is unconscionable that House Republicans would continue to block a vote even on commonsense safeguards, including expanding background checks and preventing dangerous firearms from being sold to terror suspects. Our people deserve to know where their Representatives stand on this issue, just as they now do with their Senators. Led by Civil Rights hero Rep. John Lewis, we will be sitting-in until the House is allowed an opportunity to vote. This is an issue that ought to transcend party - it's about saving lives and keeping our communities safe."
