Hoyer: Partisan Zika Bill is A Failure to Lead
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight after House Republicans passed a bill that does not adequately respond to the Zika crisis and attacks women's health:
“Tonight, as Democrats were engaged in a sit-in on the House Floor to demand a vote to keep Americans safe from gun violence, House Republicans brought to the Floor and passed a bill that puts women’s health in danger while inadequately addressing the challenge posed by Zika. Moreover, they did so in the dead of night, without any time allotted for debate or to review the bill.
“Four months ago, the President asked Republicans to join with him and with Congressional Democrats to provide emergency supplemental funding to combat the Zika virus and bring peace of mind to millions of Americans – particularly women who are pregnant and those planning to start a family. Instead, the bill Republicans advanced tonight would provide little more than half of what public health officials say we need, and it raids funds intended to support health care in Puerto Rico and U.S. territories. At the same time, Republicans’ legislation restricts women’s access to contraceptive care.
“This is more than a failure to lead – it is yet another example of blatant partisanship offered in response to a serious national challenge that demands swift, bipartisan action. House Democrats will continue to fight for the Zika response the American people deserve.”
