Hoyer: House Republicans Demonstrated Their Clear Opposition to Equality and Civil Rights in America
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans voted down their Energy and Water appropriations bill because it included an amendment banning discrimination against LGBT Americans:
"Today, a majority of House Republicans demonstrated their clear opposition to equality and civil rights in America. Their votes to defeat the annual funding bill for energy and water development programs, already laden with poison-pill riders to appease their conservative wing, simply because it contained an amendment banning discrimination against LGBT Americans, were both shameful and outrageous. We must not tolerate discrimination and inequality. And we must not permit Congress to be an agent of either.
"I commend Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney for taking a stand in defense of LGBT equality - and applaud the Democratic and Republican Members who joined in voting to adopt his amendment last night. House Democrats will continue to stand firmly in support of equality and against discrimination."
