Hoyer Statement on Supreme Court Ruling That Iran Must Pay Terror Victims
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Supreme Court ruled that Iran must pay the families of the victims of the 1983 U.S. Marine Corps barracks bombing in Beirut:
“Today, the Supreme Court brought justice for the victims of the 1983 U.S. Marine Corps barracks bombing in Beirut, which killed 241 American service members and 58 allied French personnel, along with six civilians. I joined an amicus brief in this case and worked to pass a provision supporting the families’ judgment because Iran cannot be allowed to escape responsibility for its nefarious actions, no matter how much time has passed. While Iran may try to claim that this case is an attempt by the United States to undermine the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), it is not. In fact, it is a powerful reminder that the JCPOA must never stand in the way of our efforts to hold Iran accountable for its acts of terrorism.
“Iran cannot have it both ways by seeking reintegration into the global economy and international community through the nuclear agreement while making no effort to cease its support for terrorism or its ballistic missile program. I will keep working closely with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure that the Administration has the tools it needs to hold Iran accountable until it changes its behavior.”
