Hoyer Statement on the Conviction of Radovan Karadzic
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the conviction of Radovan Karadzic of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide:
“The conviction of Radovan Karadzic of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide sends a powerful message that the world will not allow such evils to go unpunished. As Chairman of the Helsinki Commission in the early 1990’s, I supported the creation of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia – against opposition from several leading figures in the foreign policy establishment – because it is critical that justice is served for the victims and their families and that a strong deterrence is presented for the future.
“I’m proud of the bipartisan support we assembled in Congress to support the tribunal, which has been working diligently to serve the interests of justice and provide closure to those impacted by the war crimes and genocide of the Bosnian War and its related conflicts. Today the ‘Butcher of Bosnia’ and a leading perpetrator of the Srebrenica Massacre will answer for his crimes. I hope this verdict will resonate throughout the world and help prevent further bloodshed against innocents.”
