Hoyer Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Review Immigration Executive Actions
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision to hear an appeal of the Fifth Circuit’s ruling that continues to block implementation of the Deferred Action to Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs:
“I am encouraged that the Supreme Court has decided to hear an appeal of the Fifth Circuit’s ruling that continues to block implementation of the DAPA and expanded DACA programs launched by President Obama to keep immigrant families from being split apart. As stated in the amicus brief that I was proud to file along with Rep. Zoe Lofgren and 215 other Members of the House and Senate in December, the President acted within his constitutional authority when he created these programs, and they ought to be implemented without delay. I am confident that the Supreme Court will find that to be the case.
“Ultimately, DAPA and DACA are temporary measures to address a crisis exacerbated by Congress’s failure to reform our broken immigration system through statute. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, and others in the Democratic Caucus to push for the consideration of real comprehensive immigration reform. Republicans’ insistence on taking no legislative action this year with regard to this pressing national challenge is outrageous, and I urge the Speaker and Majority Leader to allow comprehensive immigration reform legislation to come to the House Floor without delay.”
