Hoyer Statement on Failure to Form South Sudan Transitional Government
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the failure by South Sudanese leaders to form a transitional government by the established January 22 deadline:
"I am very disappointed that South Sudanese President Kiir and former Vice President Machar have failed to form a transitional government by the January 22 deadline. By continuing to place their own ambitions for power above their responsibility to bring stability and an end to violence to their country, both are placing the future of South Sudan in jeopardy.
"When I traveled to Juba in 2007, I witnessed a yearning for a peaceful and independent future where South Sudanese could build a better life for themselves and their children. The political instability and humanitarian crisis festering as a result of the conflict between President Kiir and former Vice President Machar place a stumbling block in the way of those dreams and the country's ability to build an economy that helps its people reach for a better future. I continue to urge both leaders to put the well-being of their nation ahead of their own."
