Hoyer Statement on 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today to mark the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which is tomorrow:
“Ten years ago, the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast endured one of the most powerful and destructive hurricanes in our history, taking more than 1,800 lives and destroying entire neighborhoods. A decade after Hurricane Katrina, the region is still rebuilding, and we must remain committed to ensuring a complete recovery. As we reflect on the lessons learned from this tragedy, our thoughts are with the families who are gathering to remember lives lost and with all the residents who had to face the task of rebuilding homes, businesses, and communities.
“Over these past ten years, the determination and spirit of local residents have been a source of inspiration for our nation. As we mark this solemn anniversary and mourn the victims, let us continue to draw strength from the community spirit that brought workers and volunteers from across America to the Gulf Coast over the past decade to rebuild homes, treat patients in clinics, and teach in the region’s schools. We must continue these efforts in the months and years ahead.”
