Hoyer Remarks at Second "Make It In America: What's Next?" Hearing
WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) hosted the second “Make It In America: What’s Next?” hearing today to explore how the economy has, and hasn’t, changed since the Make It In America plan was created in 2010, and what families and businesses need in 2015 to Make It In America. Today, Whip Hoyer and House Democrats heard from outside experts who are leaders in their fields about the policies they think will help build on new opportunities in today’s economy and should be part of a new Make It In America plan. They also addressed the issues that were brought up at the first hearing in which over thirty House Democrats participated. Below are Whip Hoyer’s opening remarks as prepared for delivery:
“Good afternoon.
“I’m now pleased to call this hearing to order and welcome all of you to the second installment in the series of hearings called ‘Make It In America: What’s Next?’
“On July 9, we kicked off the series with a ‘Member-Day’ hearing, where we heard testimony from Representatives who have been meeting with innovators, workers, and businesses and were able to provide useful feedback about how House Democrats’ Make It In America jobs plan can be improved and updated to reflect today’s economy.
“Today, we’re turning our focus to guest experts who are leaders in the fields of entrepreneurship, information technology, workforce development, and other areas critical to our long-term economic competitiveness and job growth.
“Over the past five years, Make It In America has offered legislative proposals aimed at helping the private sector create jobs by investing in manufacturing growth and innovation.
“Now, with our economy facing different challenges and presenting new opportunities – including exciting advances in technology – we’re taking the Make It In America plan beyond traditional manufacturing and examining the all the ways our economy can create and sustain well-paying jobs.
“I’m looking forward to hearing from these experts today about how we can best do so, and I hope they will be able to provide us with a big picture view of what should be in the Make It In America plan to impact our economy’s long-term outlook for job creation, wage growth, business growth, and keeping our global competitive edge.
“I want to thank our panelists for taking the time to be here today.
“I would like to thank, in advance, our Democratic Caucus Members who are sitting on the dais.
“I expect they will engage the panelists to get at the question of how Congress can help create jobs that will open doors of opportunity for Americans.
“I’ll now welcome our first panel.”
