Nasdaq posts first record close in 15 years
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks recorded modest gains on Thursday, allowing the Nasdaq Composite to close at a record level, taking out the previous all-time high set 15 years ago. The benchmark S&P 500 hits a fresh intraday record, but pared gains to settle a few points below its previous closing record. Investor confidence on Wall Street was driven by a jump in oil prices as well as low implied volatility, according to some analysts. The Nasdaq Composite closed 20.89 points, or 0.4%, higher at 5,056.06. The S&P 500 ended 4.97 points, or 0.2%, higher at 2,112.93. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 20.42 points, or 0.1%, to 18,058.69.
