Hoyer Statement on Bipartisan Cybersecurity Bills WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on two cybersecurity bills that passed the House this week with bipartisan support: “I am pleased that the House has taken bipartisan action to address the issue of enhancing cybersecurity. Cyber threats constitute a critical and growing risk to our national security, and the bills passed this week contain provisions that will enhance private companies’ ability to share cyber threat indicators and threat information data with each other and with the federal government in a way that protects consumers’ privacy. These bills improve significantly on previous efforts by Congress to address cyber threats, especially by enhancing privacy and civil liberty safeguards. Though some concerns remain regarding certain liability protection provisions, I hope those concerns can be resolved in conference with the Senate. “I want to thank former Ranking Member Dutch Ruppersberger of the Intelligence Committee, who has been working on this issue for many years, as well as current Ranking Member Adam Schiff and Homeland Security Committee Ranking Member Bennie Thompson for their hard work on these bills and for making sure that Democrats’ views were heard during the drafting process and committee markup. We must continue to work in a bipartisan way to ensure that our country and its economy are safe from cyber threats.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov for more press, floor and member resources.
