Hoyer Statement on Senate Cloture Vote on DHS Funding WASHINGTON, DC –Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after the Senate blocked a motion to send the Homeland Security funding bill to a House-Senate conference committee: “The Senate has now voted to reject House Republicans’ approach of making funding for the Department of Homeland Security contingent on partisan immigration amendments. Five times now the Senate has refused to accept the House’s partisan bill, and there is no option left for Speaker Boehner and Leader McCarthy other than to bring the Senate’s clean bill to fund the Department through the end of the fiscal year to the Floor – or else force a shutdown on Friday that would place 30,000 Homeland Security employees on furlough and force 200,000 others to work without pay. A shutdown would undermine our national security and turn off key federal support for local first responders, law enforcement, and disaster relief. “Every Democrat is ready to vote for the Senate’s clean, full-year funding measure to prevent a shutdown, and I have no doubt that if brought to the House Floor it would pass with a bipartisan majority. I urge the House Republican leadership to act responsibly and bring this bill to the Floor right away.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov for more press, floor and member resources.
