State of the Union Address Highlights the Need to Work Together to Strengthen the Middle Class
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
On Tuesday, President Obama delivered his State of the Union address, where he discussed the significant progress our economy has made since the Great Recession, as well as the challenges still facing working families across the country. Our recovery has created 11 million jobs and unemployment is falling, but we need to do more to ensure that more Americans are feeling the economic recovery in their own lives. I support the proposals that the President laid out – such as expanding access to higher education, making homeownership more affordable, and increasing the child care tax credit – because these actions will help working families. I look forward to working with colleagues in both parties to advance the President’s proposals and give more families the security they need.
Unfortunately, House Republicans continue to abandon their duty to govern responsibly by focusing solely on partisan legislation. This week, they voted on an extreme, divisive bill to roll back women’s health care and a partisan, anti-environment bill. Next week, they will bring a partisan bill to the Floor that militarizes our southwestern border, denies Homeland Security officials the flexibility required to address existing and new challenges, and does nothing to advance security in other border areas. I oppose this bill, and I will continue urging House Republicans to work with us on comprehensive solutions to fix our nation’s broken immigration system.
The American people have made it clear they want their Representatives in Congress to work together on the issues that matter most, and I hope Republicans will abandon the partisan path they have pursued and instead work with us to better serve our constituents.
