Hoyer: Today’s GDP Estimate Shows Growing Economy, Continued Resilience of Workforce, Entrepreneurs, Consumers
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the advance estimate of GDP growth for the second quarter of 2014:
“It is welcome news this morning that our economy grew much more than expected following slowed growth in the first quarter of the year, showing the continued resilience of our workforce, entrepreneurs, and consumers. The news that real gross domestic product rose at a strong 4% rate between April and June comes at a time when the Republican Majority in Congress has failed to capitalize on our economic gains by refusing to pass jobs legislation or work with Democrats to promote fiscal sustainability. Doing so would provide greater certainty to our private sector, encouraging private investment and hiring.
“While our economy continues to gain strength, millions of Americans are still looking for work in a tough job market. They need Congress to focus on promoting policies that help businesses hire for good jobs right here in our communities, including the Make It In America plan to create jobs and strengthen American manufacturing. Instead, House Republicans are focusing on partisan gimmicks like suing the President and undermining health care reform, which are a waste of Congress’s time. House Democrats will continue to push for legislation that can help grow our economy, lead to more hiring, and expand on the gains we’ve made thus far. I hope Republicans will abandon their partisan agenda and work with us to make progress on helping our move our economy forward.”
