Hoyer Statement on One-Year Anniversary of Senate Passage of Bipartisan Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the one-year anniversary of the Senate passage of a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill on June 27, 2013:
“One year ago tomorrow, the United States Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would secure our border, fix our broken visa system, and establish a pathway to citizenship that will bring millions of undocumented immigrants out of the shadows. The Senate’s bill passed with strong bipartisan support on a 68-32 vote, paving the way for the House to act. Unfortunately, a year has now passed without House Republican leaders bringing any legislation addressing this issue to the Floor for a vote – including bills introduced and supported by fellow Republicans.
“Congress has a responsibility to fix our broken immigration system in a comprehensive way. There is no reason why the House cannot consider and pass H.R. 15, a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill introduced last year as a companion to the Senate’s legislation, and do so this summer. Enacting such reform is not only the morally right thing to do, but it would also create jobs, boost our economy, and, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, reduce our deficits by $900 billion over the next two decades. It has the strong support of a wide range of faith-communities, business organizations, labor unions, farmers, entrepreneurs, innovators, and others. More than 70% of Americans want Congress to act, including a strong majority of Republicans.
“As we mark this anniversary, I call on House Republicans leaders to bring immigration reform legislation to the Floor without delay and to let the House work its will.”
