Hoyer Statement on Israeli President Shimon Peres Receiving Congressional Gold Medal
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Israeli President Shimon Peres was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal:
“I join in congratulating President Shimon Peres of Israel on being awarded the Congressional Gold Medal today. In bestowing this medal on him, the Congress pays tribute not only to an extraordinary man but to the enduring bonds between his nation and ours, which I have been proud to help strengthen throughout my time in office.
“From escaping Europe on the eve of the Holocaust and taking a leading role in the movement for Israel’s independence and from his instrumental role in the country’s early defense to a distinguished political career, President Peres’s story mirrors the history of the nation he has served so admirably. I have had the pleasure of knowing him for many years, and I have always cherished the meetings we have had during my visits to Israel and when he has come to Washington. Having served twice as Israel’s Prime Minister and now nearing the end of his term as its President, President Peres has left an indelible mark on the history of his nation and the world, and he continues to be a tireless fighter for peace, justice, and democracy.
“I was proud to be on hand as this Congressional Gold Medal was presented to President Peres today, and I thank him for all he has done and continues to do to ensure that the nation of Israel remains one of America’s most steadfast allies during a time of shared challenges. Together, we will surely meet those challenges by remaining true to the shared values that President Peres has consistently defended throughout his life of service.”
