Hoyer Statement on Confirmation of Sylvia Mathews Burwell as Secretary of Health and Human Services WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate voted to confirm Sylvia Mathews Burwell as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services: “I join in congratulating Sylvia Mathews Burwell on her confirmation today as our next Secretary of Health and Human Services. I have had the privilege of working with Secretary Burwell over the years, and have seen firsthand her leadership skills, intelligence, and ability to bring people together – all of which are strong attributes as she continues to serve our country. “As Director of the Office of Management and Budget, she has brought a sharp intellect and sound judgment to the task of overseeing the President’s budget proposals. And having previously served as Deputy White House Chief of Staff for Policy in the Clinton Administration, Secretary Burwell brings to her new role extensive experience in partnering with Congress to achieve policy goals. I am confident she will continue to apply those qualities to her new role managing the principal agency charged with protecting the health of all Americans, providing essential human services, and continuing the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. “I look forward to working closely with Secretary Burwell over the coming months to ensure that the Department of Health and Human Services has the tools it needs to improve the health and well-being of all Americans.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
