SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The closely watched presidential election in Afghanistan is headed for a runoff between former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah and former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani after no candidate won 50% of the votes in the first round, according to media reports on Saturday. Abdullah secured 44.9% of the votes, followed by Ghani with 31.5%, Reuters reported, citing preliminary results from the Independent Election Commission. The runoff round will be held on May 28 after official results are announced on May 14, the BBC said.
