Hoyer Statement on the Fifth Anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the fifth anniversay of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act being signed into law:
"Five years ago, under the leadership of President Obama and House and Senate Democrats, Congress took action to help our economy begin to recover from the Great Recession. Five years after the enactment of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, we can see the difference it made in the millions of jobs created and saved and in the small businesses able to survive the economic downturn and invest again for the future.
"However, while we have made significant progress since February 2009, our recovery will not be complete until everyone can find a job that opens doors of opportunity to a secure place in our middle class. Democrats will not rest as long as Congressional Republicans continue to block the restoration of emergency unemployment assistance to 1.7 million Americans who are out of work and struggling to find their next job. Neither will we abandon our effort to secure a fair minimum wage so those who work full time won't live in poverty. We will keep pushing for comprehensive immigration reform to bring millions out of the shadows and into our economy, and we will continue to promote Make It In America legislation to help the private sector create new jobs that pay well.
"As we mark this anniversary, I urge Republicans to set aside their partisan agenda and instead work with Democrats to complete the work of our recovery by making sure the opportunities that make our country great are available to every American."
