Hoyer Statement on January Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for January:
“The January jobs report released this morning, which shows that our economy added 142,000 private sector jobs last month and brought the unemployment rate down to its lowest since October 2008 at 6.6%, is a reminder that our economic recovery continues to move forward. However, the work is far from complete, and we cannot rest until every American who seeks a job can find one that pays well and makes accessible the opportunities that have always sustained the American Dream.
“House Democrats are committed to protecting and expanding access to those opportunities by helping encourage private sector job growth through the Make It In America plan, which already has bipartisan support as well as enthusiasm from both business and labor. Make It In America bills ought to be considered on the House Floor without delay. At the same time, Congress must act quickly to restore emergency unemployment assistance to help the long-term unemployed continue to seek work in a tough job market, and it ought to move forward with legislation to raise the minimum wage so those who are working full time can afford to make ends meet and pursue the opportunities that lead to a secure place in our middle class.
“I urge the Speaker and Majority Leader to allow Make It In America bills to come to the Floor so we can work together, across party lines, to pass them and help put more of our people find the jobs they so desperately seek.”
