Hoyer Statement on Senate Republicans’ Defeat of Unemployment Insurance Renewal
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of a bipartisan measure to renew emergency unemployment insurance:
“It is very disappointing that Senate Republicans continue to block the restoration of emergency unemployment assistance for 1.7 million Americans who are seeking work in a tough job market. Nationally, there are three applicants for every job that becomes available, and millions who are seeking work have been out of a job for six months or more. For the long-term unemployed, this emergency assistance has been critical, and it helps stave off poverty while providing a boost to our economy. For every week Congress fails to act, another 72,000 Americans, on average, will lose access. I urge Republicans to set aside their partisan, obstructionist stance on this important issue and work with Democrats to extend this emergency assistance for those out of work and to move Make It In America bills to the Floor that will help expand access to economic opportunities and create jobs.”
