Hoyer Statement on NSA Reforms Proposed by President Obama WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama's announcement of proposed reforms to the National Security Agency (NSA) and other intelligence agencies: “Today the President laid out new steps to protect the privacy and civil liberties of Americans and increase transparency of surveillance programs, while upholding his responsibility to keep Americans safe from threats emanating from abroad. The President deserves credit for undertaking a thoughtful review of the National Security Agency’s intelligence gathering programs to strengthen both of those efforts. “Congress must continue to play an important oversight role to verify that the rights of our citizens are not infringed upon. I will continue to engage with the White House, with leaders in Congress on both sides of the aisle, with privacy advocates, with the technology industry, and with the intelligence community to make certain that the right balance is struck between respecting Constitutional rights and preventing attacks against our nation and its citizens.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
