Hoyer Statement on Introduction of Voting Rights Amendment Act WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the introduction of the Voting Rights Amendment Act, of which he is an original cosponsor: “After the Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate the pre-clearance formula under the Voting Rights Act, Congress must act to restore critical protections for minorities, seniors, and students. Today, I am proud to cosponsor the Voting Rights Amendment Act, a bill that will serve as an important first step toward achieving that goal. Introduced with bipartisan support as a commonsense answer to the Supreme Court’s unfortunate actions, our legislation represents a strong endorsement of Congress’s responsibility to safeguard Americans’ most basic and fundamental right – the right to participate equally in our democracy by way of the ballot. “I want to thank Civil Rights champion Rep. John Lewis, Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Assistant Democratic Leader Jim Clyburn, former Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Sensenbrenner, and Reps. Bobby Scott and Steve Chabot for helping to bring about a bipartisan compromise on this issue – and I also want to thank Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee, Spencer Bachus, and Sean Duffy for their leadership as original sponsors of this legislation. I hope that Majority Leader Cantor will schedule consideration of this bill soon so that we can provide reassurance to all Americans that their right to vote will be protected this November and in years to come.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
