Hoyer Statement on Senate Vote on Unemployment Insurance Extension WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate voted 60-37 to end debate on proceeding to the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act: “For the 1.4 million Americans who have lost emergency unemployment insurance and the thousands more who stand to lose them each week Congress fails to act, today’s Senate vote is a reminder that Democrats are still working hard on their behalf and will not give up until their benefits are restored. The Senate has now taken a major bipartisan step forward toward extending this lifeline, and House Republican leaders should take notice. With three job seekers for every open position, there are still many who cannot find work no matter how hard they try, and emergency unemployment insurance is crucial to keeping them and their families from slipping into poverty while our economic recovery continues. I strongly urge Speaker Boehner and Leader Cantor to schedule Floor action on extending emergency unemployment insurance benefits without delay.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
