Hoyer Statement on November Jobs Report
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for November:
“For the forty-fifth consecutive month, our economy has added private sector jobs, continuing our recovery and helping to put more Americans back to work. While I am encouraged that our unemployment rate has dropped to 7.0% and that 203,000 jobs – including 196,000 private sector jobs – were added in November, we are not adding jobs at a pace fast enough to provide economic security to every family.
“The number one item on Congress’s agenda this month must be the adoption of a balanced framework for a budget that reduces deficits, invests in our economic expansion, and provides businesses and working families with the certainty they need to plan for the future. It is imperative that an agreement includes revenues and does not place the burden of deficit reduction unfairly on the most vulnerable. Achieving that goal would significantly aid in ending the uncertainty that has held many businesses from investing private capital in new or expanded operations on our shores, which would bring many new jobs that pay well and lead to opportunities for our workers. At the same time, Congress has a responsibility to take action immediately to continue emergency unemployment insurance for those still struggling to find work before it expires on December 28.
“While pursuing a budget agreement, Congress must also take proactive steps to invest in job growth by considering legislation to enhance our competitiveness and attract manufacturers to our shores. House Democrats’ Make It In America plan, along with a complementary plan introduced in the Senate, offers bipartisan solutions that will help more Americans find work that enables them to secure a place in the middle class. The four central components to our plan are: pursuing a national manufacturing strategy, promoting U.S. exports, encouraging the return of jobs and innovation from overseas, and securing a twenty-first century workforce. I hope Democrats and Republicans in both chambers will work together in the coming weeks to achieve a budget agreement and bring Make It In America legislation to the Floor.”
