Japan stocks rise; Nikkei Average tops 12,000 from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japanese stocks danced higher in early Thursday action, extending recent gains with the help of a weaker yen. The Nikkei Stock Average broke back above 12,000 for the first time since September 2008, rising 1% to 12,049.62, with the broader Topix up 0.7%. With the dollar rising to around 94 yen, exporter shares headed upward, with Advantest Corp. adding 1.5%, Hitachi Ltd. up 1.1%, and Bridgestone Corp. rallying 2.7%. Other strong gains included a 2.8% advance for chemical maker Tosoh Corp. and a 2.3% improvement for trading house Itochu Corp. . Shares of Olympus Corp. rose 2.9% after a Nikkei news report saying the firm will slash more of its interest-bearing debt load than planned by the end of the next fiscal year in March 2014. However, Toyota Motor Corp. underperformed slightly, gaining 0.7% after news of a major boardroom shake-up.
