Australian shares start week on bright note from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse SYDNEY (MarketWatch) -- Australian shares started the first full trading week of 2013 with gains on Monday, with the S&P/ASX 200 index up 0.5% at 4,748.80. The advance in Sydney followed a positive session for U.S. stocks on Friday, after data showed the U.S. economy continued to add jobs at a moderate pace in December. Consumer staples and telecom firms were notable gainers on Monday in Australia, with supermarket operator Wesfarmers Ltd. up 1% and telecom giant Telstra Ltd. advancing 0.7%. Miners were seeing some weakness, with Rio Tinto Ltd. slipping 0.3% after a report that the firm is mulling the suspension of operations at an alumina refinery.
