Hoyer Statement on Israel's Independence Day
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel's Independence Day, which begins at sundown:
"Sixty four years ago, the State of Israel was born from the hope of generations and from the ashes of the greatest tragedy to befall the Jewish people. Today, Israel has achieved a thriving economy, a strong national defense, and an important role as a member of the community of nations. Its existence itself is a powerful symbol of the Jewish people’s resolve never again to allow the persecution of its sons and daughters.
“On my many visits to Israel, I have witnessed the triumph of the dream that sustained the Jewish people through the ages – a dream fulfilled through the blossoming of a desert, the emergence of a globally competitive high-tech sector, and the free exercise of religion for Israel’s citizens of all faiths. Israelis continue to impress the world with their achievements in business, technology, sports, the arts, and the defense of human rights, all while facing a very real danger of terrorism, regional instability, and the threat from Iran.
“For Americans, the peace and security of the State of Israel has always been in our national interest. Not only do our nations share common interests; we share the same ideals. Democracy, equal opportunity, human rights, and a desire for peace are values Israelis and Americans hold in their hearts together – and together we have worked for sixty-four years to defend and promote them. On this Yom Ha’atzmaut, Americans continue to stand side-by-side with Israel as it pursues peace and security for its people for many generations to come.”
