Remarks by Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis, U.S. Ambassador and Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs, Following the Security Council Session on Guinea Bissau Jeffrey DeLaurentis United States Ambassador and Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs New York, NY April 19, 2012
AS DELIVERED Good evening. I’d like to make a few remarks in the United States’ capacity as president of the Security Council. Following the briefing on the situation in Guinea Bissau in the open chamber, the Council continued its discussions in consultations. SRSG Mutaboba reiterated the seriousness of the situation and warned that, if civilian factions became involved in violent confrontation, casualties could be significant. He also confirmed reports that an interim president and a president of the Transitional Council had just been appointed. Council members condemned the military takeover—including the extra-constitutional appointments—and called for the restoration of democratic institutions and the release of all government officials who were arrested by the junta. They also committed to work quickly towards a presidential statement expressing this consensus and calling for the restoration of constitutional rule. Thank you. ###
