Gauck elected German president from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Joachim Gauck, 72, was elected Germany's head of state on Sunday, ending a political drama that nearly split Chancellor Angela Merkel's center-right coalition government, The Wall Street Journal reported. Gauck won 991 votes out of a total of 1,228 at the Federal Convention, the Journal said.Gauck succeeds Christian Wulff, who resigned in March after 20 months in office during an investigation into charges that he took political favors while governor of the state of Lower Saxony, according to the report. Wulff was the second president to resign in less than two years, following the resignation of Horst Köhler in 2010. Both were hand-picked by Merkel, the Journal said.
