Travel of Ambassador Melanne S. Verveer to Italy and Lithuania

Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, will travel to Rome, Italy to participate in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s (UN FAO) biennial conference entitled the Vital Role of Women in Agriculture and Rural Development. On June 27, she will speak at a side event co-hosted by the United States and Kenya titled “Dialogue on Women in Agriculture: Where to after the State of Food and Agriculture report.” She will also participate in bilateral meetings with the Government of Italy and the Vatican. On June 30, Ambassador Verveer will then travel to Vilnius, Lithuania to participate in the Community of Democracies Ministerial and related events. The Ministerial and related meetings will bring together senior government leaders, NGOs, youth, parliamentarians, women, and the private sector to advance the shared goals of strengthening civil society and supporting emerging democracies. The United States and Lithuania co-chair the Community of Democracies working group on women’s empowerment. Ambassador Verveer will participate with Secretary Clinton in the “Women Enhancing Democracy” conference of world leaders and key civil society members, co-hosted by the Lithuanian and Finnish presidents. She also will hold bilateral meetings with other officials participating in the Ministerial.
