Stocks open higher, boosted by upbeat earnings
Stocks opened higher on Wall Street Friday, buoyed by upbeat corporate earnings. The S&P 500 rose 16 points, or 0.6%, to 2,659, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 160 points, or 0.6%, to 24,713. The Nasdaq Composite was up 40 points, or 0.6%, to 7,113. Analysts said stocks were set to build on the positive earnings tone that allowed stocks to end mostly higher on Thursday. Shares of coffee-chain Starbucks Corp. were among those in the spotlight Friday, rising 2.7% after topping profit expectations. Also, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Federal Reserve is close to a decision on whether to wind down its efforts to shrink its balance sheet sooner than expected.
