Hoyer Remarks at Press Conference with House and Senate Democrats on Equal Pay Day and the Reintroduction of the Paycheck Fairness Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined House and Senate Democrats to recognize today as Equal Pay Day and reintroduce the Paycheck Fairness Act. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:
“I’m proud to join today in reintroducing The Paycheck Fairness Act.
“Today is the 94th day of 2017; a woman, on average, had to work 94 more days just to earn what her male counterpart earned last year.
“That’s wrong. We must change that reality and ensure that women always receive equal pay for equal work.
“The wage gap doesn’t just offend me as the father and grandfather of women in our workforce but also as an American who believes in equal opportunity.
“Four in ten families in our country are supported primarily by women’s incomes. Equal pay is not only an issue of fairness and justice – it is a fundamental economic concern.
“I’m proud that the first bill I brought to the Floor when I was Majority Leader in 2009 was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This legislation will build on the progress we made with that law.
“So I urge Republicans to join us in supporting this bill and bringing it to the Floor as soon as possible.”
