Hoyer Statement on Equal Pay Day
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Equal Pay Day:
“Today, on Equal Pay Day, I stand in solidarity with women across the country who demand equal pay for equal work. It is shameful that American women earn, on average, $0.80 to a man’s dollar and that the pay gap is even wider for women of color. With nearly half of households with children now supported primarily by women’s incomes, closing this gap would have a profound and positive impact on working families and our economy.
“Congress must address the wage gap and ensure that women always earn equal pay for equal work. That’s why I was proud to bring the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to the Floor as Majority Leader in 2009 and why I’ve joined with other House Democrats to introduce the Paycheck Fairness Act today in the 115th Congress, a bill that will make it harder for businesses to pay women less than men for the same work. I hope that Congressional Republicans and the President will work with us to enact this legislation and provide an income boost to millions of families supported by women’s hard work across the country.”
