Hoyer Statement on Trump Administration's Decision to Rescind Guidance Protecting the Rights of Transgender Students
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration's decision to rescind the Obama Administration’s guidance protecting the rights of transgender students:
“I am deeply disappointed by the Trump Administration's decision to rescind this guidance. Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and we ought to provide them with a safe and supportive learning environment.
“Transgender students are protected under Title IX, and this executive order will not change that. However, the President is sending a clear message to the LGBT community that he is abandoning his campaign promise to keep LGBT protections in place. Democrats, led by the LGBT Equality Caucus, will continue to stand with transgender students and work to protect the civil rights and dignity of all children in classrooms across the country.”
